No More GAS… Or Not!

Most of the time, a blog is self-centered… So, let’s be moody!! I’m not going to talk about fuel or oil but GAS!! No no… Not the gas you put in your tank, but the chronic affliction that affects musician geeks: GAS as Gear Acquisition Syndrome…

As far as I can remember, I always loved music… I bought my first guitar when I was in my early twenties. It was just an awful acoustic guitar from the brand Amazon… A cheap axe I found in a flea-market… Nice looking but terrible feeling when you put your fingers on it!! I even think I might have lost one or two phalanges on its raw fretboard!!

A few basic chords later, I left this monster aside… Yeah, I almost gave up, just strumming a few chords from time to time… The guitar virus re-emerged during my 28th year on this planet which happened to be the year I had my PhD!!! Since then, well, I owned a few guitars…

And today, for reasons I’m not going to bore you with, I am on an instrumental diet… I don’t have my Godins anymore… I sold my Resonator guitar… No more folk guitar… Damn it!!! I really do need a good new job…

A man try to find hope anywhere he can. Actually, it is kind of funny because to me it turned to be a way to refresh my passion for the object called guitar (and more generally for musical instruments) and my passion for music!! I think I didn’t sell most of my guitars because I needed money (which was true, let’s face it!) but also to be like a guitar virgin again…

From all the guitars I had, I kept only a few cheap axes…

– Ibanez AX:  It was a gift which will never be sold… Tuned in Open G with heavy gauge strings, it turned out to be an efficient slide machine…

– Jazzmonster: A jazzmaster-like axe, hybrid between a cheap Alden guitar body and a Squier stratocaster neck… Lovely but raw guitar…

– Saga Goilll Fretless Sarssi Custom… It’s been months that this guitar is waiting to be finished

– Lapsteel Clearwater : A cheap lapsteel (at least cheaper than most lapsteel guitars)… Here is a short video presenting this lovely instrument (made one week after I received it)…

Well, you might say it’s good enough to have all this… And you will be right!! But, I had a couple of very nice and good quality instruments… Going back to entry instruments is a bit frustrating… Almost like having threesomes for years and suddenly just rely on masturbation to have pleasure…   Frustrating… But so can be life…

Which guitars did I owned:

– Godin LG: Queen of the queens… 5 years of service… Never failed me…

lg

– Godin ST: The perfect stratocaster-like…

st

– Resonator Miniolian Republic: Man that was a barking guitar… Perfect blues machine… A short  video I made…

– Ovation CSE: The most expensive guitar I had… The Ovation quality…

– Yamaha CPX: My first semi-acoustic guitar… A very good guitar…

– Hamer Diablo: The super stratocaster with a floyd tremolo… It’s a shame I never got used to the tremolo…

– Telecaster Squier Biloute Made: A nice Telecaster from Squier but with a stratocaster neck… This one had a noble fate… I gave it too a friend of mine, a young punk-rock gal… Because, I can be just like that, a nice person… And I’m stopping you now from gossiping… There was no counterpart you dirty lil’ pervert…

– Strat Orangeade Djouby Finish: Good Stratocaster made from different parts… I mounted a good Lace Sensor set of pick-ups… It used to sound like a hounddog…

btp

– Marathon ES-335-like: A cheap ES-like most likely made in Japan for a German firm… Sounded very good with the handmade Lauzon pickups… It was like Being BB King with this axe in my hands… Luckily, I still play it from time to time as a friend bought from me…

– Fernandes Native: Damn, how I regret this one… A barking set of P90s pickups and a shape like no other guitar… A kind of hybrid of an LP and a Jazzmaster… I had it so cheap from the pawnshop where it stayed several months waiting

fernandes

– Fenix Jazz Bass: A nice little Jazz Bass like… Cost me a few bucks… Sold it the same few bucks…

fenix

– Basse Yamaha BB-G4: A very good bass guitar that I had to sell when the tax office wanted to take my last pair of socks from me…

yamaha

– Teleslacker: A squier base Telecaster slightly customized… It lasted two months before I sold it…

– Squier 51: This axe was a hit from Squier… I bought it second hand from a guy who tried to customize it… Well, it had the same fate in my hands… I customized it (some might say massacred it) in a trashy pop-art way… And sold it to a pawnshop to buy my Fernandes Native…

– Epiphone PeeWee LP: The mini guitar I used to introduce myself into the lapsteel world…

peewee

– Various gear: multi-effects pedals Zoom 606, Zoom GFX5, Behringer V-amp, Line6 pocket pod,  Vox Tonelab (the only one I kept),  Marshall BluesBreaker, Wah Dunlop Crybaby, amplis: Hugues & Kettner et Pignose… Most of this gear had the same fate than my guitars…

I think this is it… About 15 guitars came and left… Most of them where quite cheap except 4… Why am I telling you this story? I don’t have any clue… I just wanted, that’s it…

My conclusions on this story:

– I think I’m sick!!! Or maybe psycho…

– I don’t even try to imagine the day I’ll have a stable job (crisis or not… I do believe I will have one those soon enough…)… I might suffer another GAS attack… Or not!!

– I played all these guitars… None of them was used as a decoration or shit like that…

– Apart from a little band I played with in 2004 (and we never got out the garage) and a jam-concert with the IEFAR music school of Montpellier (one nice year of lessons I had there)… I didn’t have much opportunities to play with real people…

– Nevertheless, I played a lot by myself, made a lot of recordings and I still do it when inspiration is here and my fingers are not aching (carpal tunnel syndrome or something like that)

– Despite my weak level and skills, I still think I made a lot of progress during 5 years of guitar playing… And all these guitars contributed to this progression…

Perspectives:

– I will keep on being a guitar geek? That is very likely… This will be the direct consequence of a real job with a real salary… My wish-list is longer than the longest encyclopedia…

– I will finally play music with real people?? This will be a nice option to test…

– Try to write new songs? One thing is sure, I will never be a shred guitarist nor a guitar hero… Well, why not focusing on songwriting… Maybe my Myspace account will go back to life??

Anyway, that was my useless selfish moment… Thanks for reading it to the end…
