Zik-Box #8 – Little Walter

Not much to talk about this week… I can say that lemon tree wood is not heavy. even if  it is shaped as furniture. Well, if lemon tree wood is not heavy, it is not the same story with glass… Particularly if this glass is assembled as an aquarium!!! It is damn heavy, really heavy!! And fragile…  I hope I will have the strength to raise my arms tomorrow!!!  So, let’s talk about the new track of the Zik-Box… Just a little travel deep in the past…

Harmonica is the first musical instrument I ever owned…  I was quite young but I remember quite well, the way I used to greedily listen to the masters of Blues harmonica… The ultimate triade were Sonny Boy Williamson (Rice Miller), Junior Wells and Little Walter…

If you think about it, Little Walter had the perfect and most cliché blues destiny (well you might say that he was not the only one, it will be fair enough)… His own demons lead to his premature death at age 38 … Alcoholic, nervous and violent… In 1968, he had his last fight that left him dead! But, Little Walter was the harmonica Blues virtuoso… The first one who brought a harmonica tune to R&B charts with Juke in 1952, while he was Muddy Waters sideman… He also was the first (most likely) to  reach this unique powerful and subtile harmonica sound via the amplifiers and electricity…

Here is the tune Rocker… Not the most famous nor the best Walter’s tune but very characteristic of his style…
